The most confusing feelings...
What do you do when someone who used to be your best friend is headed into a big, scary, nasty black hole of screw ups?  Do you break the unacknowledged silence? Do you swallow your pride and hope they’ll swallow theirs? Or do you sit back and allow it to happen, knowing that it wasn’t you who did the pushing away? Do you sit by and wait for the inevitable wreck?  How can you be...

Buh bye life...
Dear free time, I just looked over my schedule for the next two months…whelp, free time, it was nice knowing you. See you in April.  Love,  Erin

Reading journal entries about you makes me smile. Things can really change in a year. But the one thing that hasn’t changed is how much I love you.

Library thoughts...
I am sitting here in the library drinking my favorite gingerbread chai, taking a break from Henry James, and just reflecting. Even though I’m stressed and nervous/anxious/excited for the rest of the semester I need to remember how lucky I am. I need to take a breath, smile, and thank God for this little chapter of peace in my life right now. I’m finally living in a space where I can be...

tumblr has so many fun posts to read, you’d rather be reading another book, there’s a tub of frosting in the fridge calling your name, when there are millions of friends to facebook stalk, and when your brain has that end-of-the-day fuzzy feeling.

You go Toni Morrison, you go!
Morrison’s views on Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: “…it is significant that this novel which had given so much pleasure to young readers was also complicated territory for sophisticated scholars. Usually the divide is substantial: if a story that pleases us as novice readers does not disintegrate as we grow older, it maintains its value only in the...

I’m trying to think up a cute, money-free surprise to make the boy for our one-year anniversary. Problem is, I’m just about the least creative person I know when it comes to arts and crafts projects.  Should I go the cute mix CD route? Or is that too obvious? Does it seem like I’m trying too hard? (Well, that’s probably because I am.) Maybe I can do a photo collage....

Happy High School Friends
I love those friends who tire you out before they even get to your house. They’re crazy, but the most fun. They come up with crazy ideas and there is never a dull moment. They’re coming over tonight…let the fun commence. But first, let the napping commence.

This week life gave the Hannigans lemons...
The Hannigans decided that they weren’t really in the mood for lemons. So the Hannigans placed the lemons aside and made chocolate-chip pie, bought new boots, snuggled while watching “The Parent Trap,” tried on bridesmaid dresses, got together with cousins, hugged each other lots, and showed life that a couple of lemons can’t bring the Hannigans down. How you like them...

Brain Break
Sometimes you wake up early to have amazing conversations with your professors. Then you go and get a delicious breakfast sandwich from Megabites. Then you sit down to work on the miles and miles of work you have to do before the semester is over. And sometimes you end up trolling through facebook and tumblr instead of working. And sometimes that’s okay. Sometimes it’s perfect.

I want you to know one thing. You know how this is: if I look at the crystal moon, at the red branch of the slow autumn at my window, if I touch near the fire the impalpable ash or the wrinkled body of the log, everything carries me to you, as if everything that exists, aromas, light, metals, were little boats that sail toward those isles of yours that wait for me. Taking a Breath
Today I need to finish everything for the week with the Russian students. I need to make it to CVS. I need to call my sister and muddle through all my confusing feelings. I should probably start my paper for Arthurian Legends and my other one about African American writers. I should probably crack open some Ovid. I might get all this done. Or I might end up huddled on my couch eating pasta and...

Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same. And sometimes roommates sit and listen with cheeseburgers and diet coke and your mom sends you a package full of pretty dresses and good movies and you know things will be alright.

Make New Friends but Keep the Old
After a summer in the heat of DC I packed my bags and brought my sweaty self home. I was planning on a week of relaxation; diet coke, food network, and buffalo chicken calzones here I come! I didn’t plan on seeing many friends. I just wanted to disappear in my relaxation. THIS DIDN”T HAPPEN. I ended up seeing all of my friends. What I thought would be tiring and awkward ended up being...

Baby Smiles
Today I was babysitting the cutest little baby ever. After twenty minutes of adorable cooing, this little beanbag started to pout and cry. I tried everything to calm her down, but neither the baby blue binky nor my heart-wrenching version of “Winnie the Pooh” would calm her down. Suddenly she got a distressed look on her face. I was about to drop everything and call 911 when something...
